Winter Is Here

Ok, so it’s suddenly winter. How do I know this? Well there are a few tell-tale signs. It’s suddenly chilly (not just in the mornings, but rather throughout the day). The South African sun is a lot brighter (Have you South Africans ever realised that you need sunglasses a lot more in winter than in summer? It’s a different type of sunshine). My skin is suddenly dry – I hate this about winter in the high-veld (when this happens I know it’s really winter). My dog just wants to cuddle under the blankets, she also doesn’t get hot halfway through the night and climb out instead she cuddles tight up against me. I find myself attracted to scarfs and gloves in the shops.

So winter came early this year – in my opinion. I also think that winter is going to be very cold this year. I love winter (other than the dry skin part) and after a long and hot summer I can’t wait for winter to return. I love the winter clothes and accessories. I love layering. I love fingerless gloves, mittens and a combination of the two. I love gumboots and hats.

Winter is a great time of year. I heard somewhere that there is no horrible weather just a different kind of lovely weather. Winter is just another kind of lovely weather to me.

Please tell me, what you love about winter? If you don’t like winter tell me what you prefer to winter.

I am Canadian and living in Pretoria. When I got here in June all the South Africans were putting on all sorts of coats and scarves. I was kind of giggling to myself. But despite that, I must say South African winters are mild which means they are perfect!

I absolutely adore winter! As you say, the layering. The fluffy jersey’s. The scarfs. Not that I particularly like the cold, I guess I’m just a winter baby (July).

But yeah, I know what you mean. winter has come early to SA. I find myself wearing a jersey all day long, not needing to take it off cause it’s hot. And my cat cuddling under the blankets with me is a sure sign winter is here. He never does that in Summer.

    Good luck!
